Recarburizing for Steel

Producing the appropriate carbon level in steel is of critical importance in order to create the desired characteristics of the final product. These include tensile strength, yield strength, hardness, and other physical properties. In steel production, Desulco® is typically used in high grade steels, such as medium to high carbon steels (0.5% – 0.8% C), steel cord (wire mesh for tires), heavy plate, rail, bearing steel, special billet qualities and trim additions to conventional carbon steel.

Reprocessing of steel can be caused due to low carburation rates.


The high level of purity and engineered porosity and surface area of Desulco® ensures rapid in-specification carburation rates, which helps avoid reprocessing of steel and minimizes slag foaming.


Hydrogen and nitrogen contamination can occur.


Due to Desulco® exceedingly low gas levels and low concentration of volatiles and moisture, which contribute to hydrogen and nitrogen contamination in the steel, gas related defects are greatly reduced or eliminated.

Desulco® is commonly used for consistently increasing the carbon content of steel at Ladle Metallurgy furnaces, but is also an excellent choice for trimming of conventional carbon steels to their final specification. Desulco® has become the carbon recarburizer of choice around the world to produce defect-free steel.
